24/09/07The first Lorry-Rail train took the long-distance auto rail route between Luxembourg and Perpignan on 10 September this year. At the launch, 16 transport companies from six different countries entrusted the transport of 22 articulated lorries to the company Lorry-Rail.
During this start-up phase of the service, a shuttle will be providing a night connection between the platforms at Bettembourg (Luxembourg) and Le Boulou (near Perpignan) over a distance of 1,050 km. A second return journey will shortly be added to the service. The trains are monitored by GPS and customers can reserve their loads via the Internet.
The long distance rail route will operate 7 days a week and enable road hauliers to forward loads of 44 metric tons.
Nicolas Welsch, the Chairman of Lorry-Rail, was extremely pleased with the successful launch of this new service, which is completely in keeping with sustainable development concerns.
